Prof. Van Leeuwen's present research topics focus on ethics of innovative technologies, like exome sequencing and tissue engineering, research ethics, ethics of palliative care, ethics of decision making, ethics of sustainable healthcare systems, clinical ethics, and moral identity of healthcare institutions. His main interests are in recapitulating virtues ethics in medicine and healthcare as an expression of humanity.
Evert van Leeuwen studied philosophy and epistemology. His PhD thesis focused on Descartes Regulae (cum laude). Since 1980, he has been working in ethics and philosophy of medicine and healthcare.
