Thijs (MAW) Merkx graduated in Dentistry in 1985 and in Medicine in 1989 at the University of Groningen. Since 1998 he is a staff member at the department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Radboud University Medical Center with a special interest in surgical head & neck oncology. He wrote a doctorate thesis "An experimental study on the use of different types of bone materials in craniofacial bone defects". Since 2002 he is a Fellow of the European Board of OMF Surgeons. He was appointed full professor in 2008 with a special emphasis on oral and maxillofacial oncology and oral medicine. From January 2009 he was appointed director of Post Graduate Education for the Medical School.
The main research interests are: translational research with focus on biomarkers for regional metastasis in oral cancer and malignant transformation of premalignant intraepithelial lesions in the head and neck, development of new techniques for intra-operative tissue analysis in head and neck cancer based on techniques such as image- and fluorescence-guided surgery and micro MRI, optimizing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in oral cancer including decision modeling approaches and quality of life and quality of care in head and neck cancer including large prospective data collection projects on these issues
Thijs is external examiner for the Oral & Maxillofacial training program in Dar es Salaam
Since January 2013 he is president of the Dutch Head & Neck Society.
