In 1980 Yvonne Engels graduated as a midwife in Heerlen. After having worked as a midwife for 15 years in primary, secondary and tertiary care, she studied Health Sciences at Maastricht University (graduated in 1998 with honor) and did her PhD in 2005 at the department IQ-Healthcare of Radboudumc Nijmegen on improving the organization of general practice in Europe.
In 2006 she started at the department of anesthesiology, pain and palliative medicine as senior researcher in improving the quality of cancer pain and of palliative medicine. Now she has built up a research line on proactive palliative and supportive care. She currently leads an FP7 EU project on implementing indicators to improve the organization of palliative care (IMPACT), a controlled trial on early palliative care in patients with COPD (PROLONG), and a cluster randomized trial on pain management in patients with cancer (PIJNSEIN). She co-leads a work package in an FP7 project on advance care planning in frail elderly in residential homes (PACE). She is currently supervising 8 PhD students.
