Marlies Leenaars is interested in methodology to improve the quality of preclinical animal research in order to have a significant impact on health care. Her mean focus is implementation of the concept of systematic reviews of animal studies within laboratory animal science through education and (inter)national lobby. She has a postdoctoral degree in laboratory animal science and was an animal welfare officer for 10 years. She was a member of the animal ethics committee of VU Amsterdam, Utrecht University, RIVM and KNAW. Currently she is an assistant professor at SYRCLE and jPL. She is the coordinator of the national course on laboratory animal science in Nijmegen and module coordinator of 5AM01. Leenaars is member of the national stakeholders meeting on the implementation of EU2010/63 (new law on animal experimentation) and of the national working group on education and training of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. She has developed several tools and educational programs to enhance implementation of performing systematic reviews of animal studies. She recently received funding from the Ministry of Economic Affairs to develop online education and training on systematic reviews of animal studies.
