Infectious disease is still one of the major causes of human mortality. The development of novel treatment options is hampered by our lack of comprehensive knowledge of the human biological processes induced during host-pathogen interaction and their causal role in disease. We are applying a system genetic approach in population-based cohorts to obtain comprehensive knowledge of molecular pathways in the context of infection. In this talk I will describe the recent results from this approach and discuss about future directions in infectious disease research.
