5. The RIMLS motto is
'to understand molecular mechanisms of disease'. What does this
mean for you?
The focus of my research is to understand the natural disease course in a rare metabolic disease (mitochondrial 3243A>G mutation). Understanding mechanisms of disease is incremental for the development of future treatments for these patients. Molecular mechanisms is part of the research, but is beyond my direct scope. I focus on patients as a whole, finding clinical sign and symptoms of this mutation that might help us in understanding the disease.
6. What is the biggest
motivation in your work?
Every year many patients, mostly young children, die of mitochondrial disease. No cure is available for them. With the research I and my fellow researchers at the Nijmegen Centre for Mitochondrial Disorders (www.NCMD.nl) do, we work to find a cure for these patients.
7. What is your dream
for the future?
Having so much progression in research that we can find treatments for diseases that are not curable at the moment.
