1. Name & Nationality
Rachel van Swelm, Dutch.

2. When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?
First a hairdresser, then a pathologist (I watched too many criminal TV series) and finally a biomedical scientist.

3. What was your previous academic training, where did you study?
Biomedical Sciences at the Radboud University Medical Center.

4. What is your current function and what would you like to achieve?
I am currently working as a postdoc researcher within the Iron Group led by prof. Dorine Swinkels, which is part of the department of Laboratory Medicine. My research focus is on the role of iron and iron regulation in kidney function in health and disease. Since I cannot think of any other job that suits me, my ambition is to try and establish my own research line.

5. The RIMLS motto is 'to understand molecular mechanisms of disease'. What does this mean for you?
Exactly what is says: I have a natural curiosity to want to understand the molecular pathways  that lead to adverse processes in the body, know what triggers these events and figure out which are the key mechanisms that result in disease. By better  understanding these processes we can optimize patient care.

6. What is the biggest motivation in your work?
The biggest motivation in my work in general is to contribute to understanding of disease mechanisms and finding new treatment modalities that will actually help patients. For me personally, it is very satisfying to unravel molecular  processes one piece at a time and try to comprehend the overwhelming diversity of pathways that are involved in disease and/or toxicity.

7. What is your dream for the future?
I would like to establish my academic carrier and transfer my research knowledge to the scientific field, but also to new PhD students.
