On January 8, Tom Schirris, Dept. Pharmacology and Toxicology was awarded the Annual Prize on Neuromuscular Diseases during the Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds Symposium in Amsterdam. He received the prize as first author of the best scientific paper of 2015.
The winning article uncovers the long-sought mechanism by which statins exert an off-target effect that disrupts muscle mitochondria function, possibly causing the frequently occurring muscle pain and weakness in patients taking these cholesterol-lowering drugs.
The paper was published in Cell Metabolism, Schirris et al.: “Statin-Induced Myopathy Is Associated with Mitochondrial Complex III Inhibition”
