Nienke de Vries received wednesday 23 March the yearly PhD thesis price from the Dutch Association for Physiotherapy for her thesis: Managing the decline: physical therapy in frail elderly.
A jury of five professors judged 14 dissertations. The jury was unanimous that this thesis was the best: "the theme, patients population, approach and results (particularly the cost effectiveness of the intervention) guarantee that the results from the studies in the thesis are quite convincing and ready to implement in daily physiotherapy practice". In addition there was appreciation for the publications in journals with a high impact factor, a well-executed big trial and the development of a measuring instrument to measure frailty.
During her PhD research Nienke developed a personalized physiotherapy intervention for vulnerable older people on the basis of two systematic reviews and interviews with patients, caregivers and health care providers. After a pilot study the cost-effectiveness trial was performed in thirteen practices across The Netherlands. The results show that an in-depth problem analysis at the beginning of the treatment results in better outcome at a lower price.
We congratulate Nienke and the PhD team!
