Esmée Bakker, PhD candidate at the department of Physiology and at the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences in Liverpool.
Where and when were you born?
In Amsterdam. I was the last baby to be born in the northern part of the city in 1992 and because of that me and my parents were mentioned in an article in the local newspaper.
Where do you live and with whom?
I live in Brakkenstein, Nijmegen, by myself. It is very close to work and the university sports center.
Who was your role model when you were a kid?
I didn’t have a specific role model, but if I should choose one, it would be Hermione of Harry Potter.
Why aren’t you doing the same thing now as your role model (or do you?)
I’d love to learn magic at Hogwarts, but unfortunately I didn’t receive a letter when I turned 10 years old ;). But I am happy with my job here at the department of Physiology and at the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences in Liverpool.
What is the thing in your (work or other) history that you are most proud of?
I just started my PhD, so I haven’t achieved many work-related things yet. However, I am proud of my first 3 (number 4 and 5 are coming soon) published papers. All papers are projects of my internships during my master.
What is it that you would like to achieve in work in the next 5 to 10 years?
I hope to finish my PhD and work as a scientist in the area of physical activity and cardiovascular diseases. I also love to travel, so hopefully I could spend a year abroad and work in another research institute.
For what can we wake you up?
Chocolate cake or cheese
What is your hobby and how good are you at it?
My new hobby is cycling. I bought a racing bike a few months ago, and I love it! Especially when it is sunny outside. I am not very good, just a starting amateur, but I have three training sessions a week. So hopefully I will improve quickly.
What is your biggest irritation?
Biking in a downpour.
Who would you like to invite for dinner, if you had the chance?
