Guido Bastiaens, Teun Bousema and Robert Sauerwein of the Dept. of Medical Microbiology published together with a colleague from London in PLOS Medicine this week.
They identify challenges to implementing the current World Health Organization's strategy of scaling up and maintaining malaria rapid diagnostic test coverage in sub-Saharan Africa, to ensure that every suspected malaria case is tested before treatment with antimalarial drugs. The expansion of malaria rapid diagnostic tests has the potential to rationalize antimalarial drug use, increase cost-effectiveness, and improve public trust in health care workers.
